What happens when you remove chance from the outcome?

LUCK is a set of six silver dice where numerical variance has been entirely removed. Each die shows a single number on every face. Roll the one and you get one. Roll the six and you get six. Every time. Forever.

These are not dice anymore. They are certainty engines disguised as probability tools. The appearance of chance without the substance of it.

Chance is fundamental to how humans navigate the world. Every decision contains uncertainty we've learned to live with. We satisfice. We default to habit. We pick the brand we recognize. Human behavior is approximately rational, bounded by the constraints of being biological.

Entire industries are built on this. Brand value is a tax on cognitive laziness. Interchange fees are a tax on payment friction. Insurance renewals are a tax on inertia. None of these business models survive perfect optimization.

The dice that show only sixes aren't lucky. They're inevitable. Predetermined. The outcome is known before the roll. That's what optimization does. It removes the variance. And variance is where the value was hiding.

LUCK proposes that many outcomes attributed to chance are structured in advance of participation. The sculpture doesn't argue this is good or bad. It makes it physical. Six objects that look like dice but aren't. They preserve the form while removing the function.

Handcrafted in sterling silver, the set gives weight and permanence to what is typically fleeting: the outcome of a roll.
To house the edition, we collaborated with **Hanoia**, the Vietnamese lacquer house known for bringing centuries-old lacquer techniques into contemporary object design.
Hanoia produced a custom black holder in high-gloss lacquer, lined with black velvet and precisely fitted to the dimensions of each die. Within this structure, each number occupies its own exact position. The holder establishes a fixed spatial order and forms an integral part of the artwork.
Each of the 80 silver sets is paired with a unique digital artwork: an 8×10 grid of ASCII dice where the values sum to exactly the edition number. While each edition number is fixed, the arrangement of dice values is determined by Ethereum block hashes, creating a living artwork that evolves with the blockchain itself.

Jack Butcher

Jack Butcher is a Nashville-based artist and founder of Visualize Value. After a decade in advertising, he built a studio vocabulary that compresses complex ideas into minimal forms: black-and-white schematics, modular grids, and iterative series that track how images accrue meaning in public. Visualize Value, launched in 2019, became the armature for that approach.
