TJO is a contemporary post-photographic artist born in Chicoutimi, Québec. Working across photography, collage, painting, and forms of material disruption, his interdisciplinary practice is framed by mental health and psychological processes as an attempt to externalise internal dialogue and torments.
A recurring setting in his work is the 'blue room': a dark, saturated interior that functions as an endless passage inward, offering a visual metaphor for the continuous exploration of the self. Within these spaces, TJO introduces red figures – archetypal presences rendered as concentrated energy. In his art, the blue/red contrast is both compositional and conceptual: they show containment versus propulsion, immersion versus interruption, and a 'calm' atmosphere versus 'heavy' and 'fiery' impulse. Within the blue spaces and the red figures, TJO explores the universal aspects of the human condition. Through these archetypal representations, he aims to evoke emotions and provoke thoughts in the viewer, inviting them to reflect on their psyche. Interested in the artistic relationship between Dionysus and Apollo, he employs an amalgamation of techniques to create an imperfect balance between his subject and its physical form using mixed-media and any form of material destruction that can blend excess with the dream.
Throughout, TJO positions art as a vehicle for dialogue and social healing – explicitly linking his work to conversations around mental health, domestic violence, drug exposure, and the perception of cognitive divergences.
His practice also includes performative collaboration: during Silk Road Chapter 02 in Bali, Emergence unfolded as a multi-sensory performance together with dancer Morale and painter RAM, merging movement, color, sound, and painting while testing the ambivalence between control and chaos in creative flow.
