Samantha Cavet

Samantha Cavet is a photographer drawn to the hinge points between emotion, memory, and presence. Born in Caracas, Venezuela and now based in Spain, she works with a visual language that borrows from painting without trying to impersonate it: softened edges, compressed tonal ranges, and skies that behave like a mood.

Cavet’s images tend to resist plot. Instead, they build conditions: fog, brooding light, a lone figure or tree scaled against a field, where the viewer’s own affect does some of the work. This is where her frequent association with Impressionism is useful, not as a stylistic label but as seeing the world not as a stable description, but as a sensation and time-of-day feeling with possible shifting perceptions. Cavet’s inspiration comes from all over: painting, music, film, and poetry, and her pictures often read like visual equivalents of those sources. Her work is slow, melancholic, and attentive to tonal nuance.

Looking at her process, post-production is a very important part of it. Cavet foregrounds image altering and editing as a central part of how the photographs arrive at their final emotional temperature – how a landscape becomes more internal for example. That emphasis on revision and atmosphere is also visible in the way her work holds onto the time-capsule pull of old photographs: the sense that an image can be ‘past’, yet still inhabited.

Within contemporary photography, Cavet’s practice sits in a post-romantic lineage with the landscape as a psychological stage, while at the same time having a measured use of symbolism, a minimal narrative, and an insistence that feeling can be structured without being explained.
